Revolution in Casting : casting director Angélique Luisi’s take on the changing face of the profession!

Decoding a casting expert… Training to master today’s castings: a look at trends and how training shapes talent? Interview with Angélique Luisi*, Casting Director and ARDA member.

Master your casting and land the role of your dreams, that’s what Mon Coach Academy, an accredited training organization specializing in orality and acting techniques founded in 2015 by actor and director Régis Van Houtte, offers! With the number of actors on the rise, casting directors are continuing their search for new talent. Angélique Luisi, Casting Director recognized in the world of television, cinema, theater and advertising, and trainer at Mon Coach Academy, shares her expertise on the new trends and major challenges facing the sector.
- How have casting directors’ expectations changed in recent years?
The rise of platforms has led to an evolution in productions, both national and international, generating significant demand. Every year, we see more and more players on the market, with diverse backgrounds, including professional reorientations. I’ve even met men and women from the health and legal professions who, after 20 years, are changing career paths. Barriers come down, and many allow themselves to take the plunge. Today, the number of players on the market has increased: more opportunities for players, hence the importance of training.
- What skills are essential for successful casting today?
To succeed in casting, it’s essential to make a real, committed and strong proposal, and to tell your own story within the story. It’s not a question of originality, but of authenticity. People who succeed in this field: it’s all about hard work and commitment within a professional framework. Casting shouldn’t be seen as a performance or a contest; it’s the artist’s eye that makes the mark. We want to be moved, we are the first audience, it’s a color of the characterand an accuracy of play.
- Does AI represent a threat to casting directors or an opportunity to transform their methods?
Artificial intelligence cannot generate what lies at the heart of our profession: emotion. Casting is, among other things, subjective and emotional. Training remains essential, and must be provided by educationalists, as it is intrinsically linked to the actor’s work. It’s essential to have a human touch to direct the tests, there’s an interaction. I don’t think there’s any danger of that. There’s a very artisanal side to our profession; theater, for example, has never changed, and we have specific codes. Technology may evolve, and that may be useful to us. As for artificial intelligence, I don’t see it as a threat today.
- What makes Mon Coach Academy’s “Mastering Casting” course particularly well-suited to the new demands of casting?
It’s a course that allows us to work with small groups, which is essential. It gives us the time to share with each actor. The small group is a huge asset. The idea behind the workshops is to research, work and take the time to talk about casting and the casting exercise. We take the time to deconstruct the casting exercise in order to enlarge the actor’s acting and optimize the casting moment, and make his acting more subtle.
Régis Van Houtte says: “Mon Coach Academy training provides actors with the new and latest techniques they need to know to pass a casting. What’s more, they work directly with the people they want to work with, namely today’s hottest casting directors. In addition to knowledge, this offers the immediate possibility of being spotted.
